With the “H2Direkt” project, Thüga and Energie Südbayern wish to show how the conversion works.

It’s part of the Federal Ministry of Research’s “TransHyDE” lead hydrogen project, which is assisting Germany’s transition to a hydrogen economy.

As a result, Thüga announced the creation of a broad guideline on how current networks can be rededicated to pure hydrogen.

Over an initial period of 18 months, a network string of Energie Südbayern (ESB) with ten residential and one commercial customer will be provided with 100 percent of the element. Thüga AG Chairman of the Management Board Michael Riechel explains: “We want to show that feeding pure hydrogen into an existing gas network is possible in collaboration with the ESB Group. In Germany, be able to constitute the backbone of a climate-friendly hydrogen economy.”

H2Direkt lays the groundwork for the distribution networks’ future role: A gas sensor system will be evaluated for this purpose. A communication concept responds to the basic question, “How can I persuade the customer?” For the client side, a specific, tested safety concept as well as a hydrogen metering and payment system are being developed. The field test then focuses on the systems and network’s safe and continuous operation. At the end of the day, all technical and organizational activities are bundled into a guideline that outlines the basic distribution network changeover path. The Federal Ministry of Research will sponsor H2Direkt with a total of 2.5 million euros.
