CF Industries has signed a contract with thyssenkrupp to deliver a green hydrogen plant for the manufacture of green ammonia at the Donaldsonville manufacturing complex in Louisiana.
Thyssenkrupp will design and produce a 20 MW hydrogen production unit based on alkaline water electrolysis, as well as all required utilities, under this contract.
The plant will use renewable energy from the grid to generate green hydrogen, which will then be processed into 20,000 tons of green ammonia per year at CF Industries’ Donaldsonville, LA facility.
Green ammonia can be used as a highly efficient renewable energy storage and transportation medium, as well as a direct clean fuel, such as in maritime transportation. Engineering and procurement activities have begun, and development is expected to begin in 2023.
