Topsoe, a global leader in carbon emission reduction technologies, has secured a EUR 94 million grant from the EU’s Innovation Fund for its groundbreaking Solid Oxide Electrolyzer Cells (SOEC) factory.

This marks Topsoe’s largest investment to date, underscoring the company’s commitment to advancing carbon-neutral technologies.

At the core of this ambitious project is the manufacturing of advanced, energy-efficient SOEC electrolyzers. These electrolyzers play a pivotal role in the production of green hydrogen and its derivatives. Recognizing the importance of electrolyzers in decarbonizing energy-intensive industries, the EU Commission has proposed deploying 40 GW of hydrogen electrolyzer installations and producing 10 million tonnes of green hydrogen in Europe.

Topsoe’s SOEC electrolysis technology is poised to revolutionize the green hydrogen landscape. When deployed in the production of green hydrogen, these electrolyzers are projected to reduce emissions by approximately 7.5 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent over the initial ten years of operation compared to hydrogen produced from natural gas.

The SOEC factory, located in Herning, Denmark, boasts an initial manufacturing capacity of 500 megawatts of SOEC electrolyzers, with the option for future expansion. Operational since 2024, the facility is set to employ 200 people at full capacity. The 23,000-square-meter site is strategically positioned at Haldor Topsøes Vej 2, 7400 Herning, Denmark.

Beyond direct employment, the factory is expected to create numerous indirect job opportunities throughout its supply chain, from infrastructure building and maintenance to logistics and beyond. This multifaceted impact aligns with the broader goal of fostering sustainability not only in technology but also in economic development.
