TotalEnergies and Air Liquide Partner to Produce Green Hydrogen in the Netherlands

TotalEnergies has signed agreements with Air Liquide to develop two green hydrogen projects in the Netherlands, aiming to produce and deliver approximately 45,000 tons of green hydrogen annually.

These projects, powered primarily by the OranjeWind offshore wind farm—a joint venture between TotalEnergies (50%) and RWE (50%)—are expected to reduce CO2 emissions from TotalEnergies’ refineries in Belgium and the Netherlands by up to 450,000 tons per year. This initiative aligns with TotalEnergies’ 2030 ambition to decarbonize the hydrogen used in its European refineries and supports European renewable energy targets in transport.

TotalEnergies and Air Liquide have established a 50-50 joint venture to build and operate a 250 MW electrolyzer near the Zeeland refinery in the Netherlands. The electrolyzer, scheduled for commissioning in 2029, will produce up to 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually, with the majority supplied to the Zeeland refinery. This project is expected to reduce the refinery’s CO2 emissions by up to 300,000 tons per year.

The joint venture represents a global investment of approximately €600 million, with both partners seeking support from European and national subsidy programs. The project underscores the growing role of green hydrogen in decarbonizing industrial processes, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors.

In addition to the Zeeland project, TotalEnergies has signed a tolling agreement with Air Liquide for 130 MW of capacity within Air Liquide’s 200 MW ELYgator electrolyzer project in Maasvlakte, Netherlands. This agreement will enable the production of 15,000 tons of green hydrogen annually for TotalEnergies’ Antwerp refinery. The renewable electricity required for this project will be supplied by the OranjeWind offshore wind farm.

The ELYgator project is expected to be operational by the end of 2027 and will reduce CO2 emissions at the Antwerp refinery by up to 150,000 tons annually. This collaboration builds on previous agreements between TotalEnergies and Air Liquide, including the supply of green hydrogen to TotalEnergies’ Normandy, Grandpuits, and La Mède refineries in France.

To date, TotalEnergies has secured contracts for over 170,000 tons of green hydrogen annually across its refineries in France, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. These efforts are part of the company’s broader commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of its energy production and supply operations.
