Toyota Motor Europe and VDL Groep have revealed their first fuel cell demo truck. This initiative demonstrates Toyota’s commitment to decarbonizing its logistics processes and contributes to the broader European goal of transitioning to clean and sustainable energy solutions.

The debut of the first fuel cell demo truck marks the culmination of collaborative efforts between Toyota and VDL Groep, a partnership announced in May. By integrating Toyota’s advanced fuel cell technology into VDL heavy-duty trucks, the project aims to revolutionize logistics operations in Europe by significantly reducing their carbon footprint.

Real-World Testing and Evaluation

The initial fuel cell demo truck will undergo rigorous road testing and evaluation, providing invaluable insights and data for further improvements and developments in the project. This marks the first step in a journey that promises to transform the way goods are transported across Europe.

VDL Groep is in the process of preparing four more fuel cell trucks, which will be put to use by Toyota’s logistics partners, including VOS Transport Group, CEVA, Groupe CAT, and Yusen. These transport companies will play a pivotal role in the project, operating the hydrogen trucks along daily logistics routes that pass through key European locations, including Belgium (Antwerp), France (Lille), Germany (Cologne), and the Netherlands (Amsterdam and Rotterdam). Importantly, each of these routes is equipped with at least one hydrogen refueling station (HRS) and backup solutions, ensuring uninterrupted operations.

Driving Europe’s Ecological Energy Transition

This collaborative venture is expected to yield valuable insights into the practical deployment of fuel cell trucks on public roads, advancing Europe’s ecological energy transition. The five-year trial period will not only facilitate the development of sustainable hydrogen infrastructure across Europe but also align with AFIR requirements, fostering the emergence of more carbon-neutral hydrogen mobility solutions.

This project aligns seamlessly with Toyota’s broader commitment to decarbonize logistics and achieve full carbon neutrality by 2040. Beyond the electrification of passenger vehicles, Toyota recognizes the value of partnerships with diverse stakeholders across the mobility spectrum to accelerate the transition to a sustainable and accessible zero-emission hydrogen economy.
