Toyota Motor Company (Toyota) has been collaborating with Fukushima Prefecture since June 2021 on the creation of new future cities that will use both hydrogen produced in Fukushima and hydrogen-related technology developed there.

Toyota and the DENSO Group have been working together on these initiatives to employ hydrogen and renewable energy to decarbonize plants.

Toyota recently created new electrolysis equipment that uses the FC stack and other Mirai technologies to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen. The machinery will be put into service in March at a DENSO Fukushima Corporation plant, which will act as a venue for the technology’s deployment and promotion of future general use. Toyota will further up its efforts to create a prototype for the local use of hydrogen that is produced nearby. Clean hydrogen will be produced using electrolysis equipment and burned in one of the plant’s gas furnaces.

Toyota will also make public the specifics of its attempts to develop such a hydrogen consumption model in the hopes that many people from diverse fields and areas will adopt it.

In order to promote programs aimed at lowering CO2 emissions and help the world become carbon neutral, Toyota has positioned hydrogen as a crucial fuel. By doing this, it hopes to encourage the use of hydrogen not just through fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs), such as cars, trucks, and buses, but also through the broad usage of fuel cell (FC) products, like the creation and testing of stationary FC generators. Toyota is collaborating with numerous business partners in the fields of hydrogen production, transportation, storage, and use in order to achieve this.

For FCEVs, FC stationary generators, manufacturing in factories, etc., Toyota has used hydrogen up to this point. Additionally, it has supported transportation-related operations, such as the design and production of FC trucks for the transportation of hydrogen. Toyota aspires to contribute to the development of electrolysis equipment as well as the expansion of hydrogen production possibilities in Thailand using biogas produced from livestock manure.
