In the world of automobiles, tradition and innovation often coexist, and Toyota’s latest offering, the all-new Crown Sedan, exemplifies this balance. While the nameplate has been synonymous with the classic four-door sedan, Toyota is reimagining tradition with a twist. The 2023 Toyota Crown Sedan, often referred to as the “new formal,” offers a hatchback-like design that blends style with functionality, making it suitable for both personal and business use.
Since its inception by Toyopet in 1955, the Toyota Crown has been known as a quintessential four-door saloon. However, Toyota has now ventured into diversifying the Crown lineup by introducing new body styles. Despite these changes, the Japanese automaker hasn’t forgotten its roots and has presented a sedan that pays homage to tradition with a touch of modernity.
The Crown Sedan’s exterior stands out from the rest of the line-up with its unique design. However, when you step inside, you’ll find a familiar environment. The interior boasts a horizontally oriented 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a gauge cluster, a dashboard layout, and a steering wheel similar to the other Crown models.
Customers have the liberty to choose from six exterior finishes, including white, silver, black, metal, grey, and bronze. When it comes to the interior, they can opt for black or brown upholstery, allowing for a level of personalization in line with their preferences.
The 2023 Toyota Crown Sedan offers two different powertrain options, catering to a variety of driving needs. Customers can select either a hydrogen fuel-cell (FCEV) system or a petrol-powered hybrid. Both powertrains deliver their might to the rear wheels.
The hydrogen-fueled Crown Sedan uses the same advanced system found in the Mirai. It comes equipped with three high-pressure hydrogen tanks and fuel cells. This configuration enables the Sedan to travel an impressive distance of up to 820 kilometers between refills. Moreover, it empowers users to supply energy to their homes and electrical appliances, even when the vehicle is turned off.
On the other hand, the hybrid version employs a 2.5-liter engine, combined with two electric motors. In addition to its efficient propulsion, it offers two accessory outlets that can be used to charge electric appliances.
The Toyota Crown Sedan is exclusively available to customers in Japan and is scheduled for launch on November 13, 2023. However, there’s a glimmer of hope for enthusiasts outside Japan, as the model may find its way to other countries, including New Zealand, where Toyota’s local branch has already showcased the Crown Crossover as part of its Signature Class range.
