For many, hydrogen is an essential component of a successful energy transition, and with good reason.

People were curious about hydrogen’s potential applications in numerous industries before this alternative energy source was officially launched on the market. A total of four research have been compared by Acatech and the Society for Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (Dechema). A related analysis on the application of hydrogen in the field of domestic mobility is now being released.

In most scenarios, hydrogen will be used to meet between 6 and 33% of the domestic final energy demand in the transportation sector in 2045. In terms of numbers, this indicates that between 25 and 100 terawatt hours of hydrogen will be utilized as a fuel in 2045, but the specialists discovered that the overall energy requirement of the transportation industry is between 300 and 400 terawatt hours. Heavy goods traffic is necessary for between 60 and 80 percent of the hydrogen utilized in transportation alone. Although the amount of hydrogen utilized in bus and inland waterway transportation can potentially be quite significant, these sectors will ultimately have modest energy needs. In 2045, 85 to 150 terawatt hours of hydrogen will be consumed, based on the possibilities looked at. making e-fuels, as is also said. Domestic shipping and domestic aircraft will be predominantly powered by these e-fuels or synthetic fuels. E-fuels would only serve to increase the long-distance independence of current fleets and heavy-duty traffic on German highways.

A consensus among the modelers is revealed by the examination of the numerous research. They think that in the future, battery electric cars will dominate most transportation uses. And only in those cases where it is not technically feasible or economically feasible would hydrogen and e-fuels be used to power cars, which would also be very important for the operation of current fleets in a climate-neutral manner. The bottom line is that large vehicles account for the majority of the demand for pure hydrogen in the transportation industry.

Future transportation will be more energy-efficient

The article also includes a summary of a roundtable discussion on hydrogen’s role in the transportation industry that took place in spring 2022. The conversation included three experts from science, three experts from businesses and business groups, and one expert from the governmental sector. The specialists involved add that the book employs visuals to highlight how high the energy demand in the transportation industry and the percentage of e-fuels are anticipated by various research. The majority of scenarios anticipate a large decrease in overall energy consumption for transportation, which is mostly attributable to increased electrification in the automobile and truck industry and the resulting much-improved efficiency of the drive systems.
