TÜV Rheinland is consolidating its numerous services for the safe production, storage, transportation, and use of hydrogen as an energy carrier on a global scale: the company’s newly created “TÜV Rheinland Hydrogen Competence Center” brings together professionals from Europe and Asia in its core team.

“The aim of the new competence center is to provide partners from the business community worldwide with services along the entire value chain in the use of hydrogen as an energy carrier. To this end, we are bringing together experts from numerous disciplines.

The energy transition – that is, the switch from fossil to renewable energy generation – brings with it a key challenge: the problem of storage. The two most important renewable energy sources are the sun and the wind, both of which are already excellent in technical terms for energy generation. However, they are not available at regular intervals; generation fluctuates depending on the weather and time of day. When it comes to the storage problem, hydrogen can offer a solution and be an opportunity to link previously separate areas such as electricity, heat and mobility,” says Thomas Fuhrmann, head of TÜV Rheinland’s Hydrogen Competence Center.

The benefits of hydrogen are being recognized in a wide variety of businesses and countries, and are propelling rapid technological advancement. TÜV Rheinland offers a comprehensive range of services connected to hydrogen production, storage, transportation and distribution, as well as application and usage in a variety of industries. The origins of these certifications are as follows: Hydrogen production requires a great deal of energy. As a result, the “carbon footprint” of the hydrogen supply chain increases. Environmentally speaking, it is therefore preferable to generate hydrogen using renewable energy sources. Future hydrogen use strategies aim to accelerate the development of climate-neutral “green hydrogen.” TÜV Rheinland experts assist players in the hydrogen supply chain in this regard by certifying climate-neutral or green hydrogen.

The TÜV Rheinland Hydrogen Competence Center serves as a springboard for the continued development of services for industry across all of TÜV Rheinland’s business lines: industrial testing, mobility applications, product testing, system certifications, as well as training, occupational health and safety.
