Ukraine can help EU attain its hydrogen ambitions.

Ukrainian electrolyser capacity could reach 10 GW by 2030. It’s a chance for Ukraine to gain energy independence, security, and EU integration.

Hydrogen Ukraine (H2U) proposes to build a renewable hydrogen plant in Reni, Odessa, a desirable location due to its wind and solar potential and well-developed transit infrastructure.

The plant’s position is strategic. It has 320 sunny days per year with average solar radiation of 1,600 kW/m2. Wind potential is 1.5-4 GW. It also has enormous water resources, with a Danube river flow of 6,400 cubic metres per second. Finally, Reni’s port’s transport infrastructure allows hydrogen to be shipped to 10 Danube countries.

First stage of project will include 100 MW electrolyser, 80 MW wind, and 120 MW solar. 7,000 tons per year will be the hydrogen manufacturing capacity. By 2030, electrolyser capacity should reach 3 GW.

Petrochemical and metallurgical companies looking to decarbonize will be the main consumers. Then, the transport sector and national power system will be balanced.
