Ukraine to Build 10GW Renewable Hydrogen Capacity

Ukraine intends to construct 10 GW of renewable hydrogen capacity, targeting the strong demand from the European Union (EU).

Currently, Ukraine’s hydrogen production stands at approximately 360,000 tons annually, fulfilling mainly domestic ammonia production requirements. Though currently meeting just 0.5% of global demand, Ukraine could significantly augment its hydrogen production capabilities with technological advancements and appropriate investments.

The EU’s hydrogen directives involve the construction of 10 GW of electrolysis capacity in Ukraine by 2030 with a view to boosting renewable hydrogen production. The directives envisage that 1.8 GW of this capacity will be for local requirements, specifically generating green ammonia for the agricultural sector.

Ukraine has plans to export the surplus hydrogen to the EU via its existing gas transport system. The expected creation of the Central European Hydrogen Corridor, extending from Ukraine to Germany, gained backing from the European Commission.

Additionally, the EU’s metallurgical industry offers further demand for Ukraine’s renewable hydrogen with its requirement of approximately five million tons of hydrogen annually for decarbonization purposes. Major metallurgical operations are expected to prepare for hydrogen utilization by 2026-2027.
