The UmweltBank is financing the WUN H2 hydrogen project which began construction in Wunsiedel.
One of the largest plants for the production of green hydrogen in Germany is being built in Upper Franconia.
The plant should produce up to 1,300 tons of green hydrogen per year. Using the so-called PEM electrolysis process, water is split into hydrogen and oxygen (electrolysis) by means of an electric current. The system is operated exclusively with wind and solar energy.
Hydrogen is a key energy carrier for the transportation and industrial sectors, as well as a crucial component of the energy transition. The hydrogen produced by WUN H2 meets the demands of regional businesses and contributes to industrial decarbonization. The commissioning date is set during the summer of 2022. After that, the system can save approximately 15,000 tons of CO2 each year. Siemens Smart Infrastructure is constructing it for the project business WUN H2 GmbH.
