The Dutch organization GroenvermogenNL has launched the €18 million HyTROS research and development program, focusing on hydrogen transportation, offshore storage, and safety. The program involves a consortium of 11 research universities, two universities of applied sciences, two research institutes, and 18 industrial partners.

Within this ambitious initiative, Associate Professor Chris Slootweg of the Van ‘t Hoff Institute for Molecular Sciences (HIMS) will co-lead a research line into large-scale hydrogen storage. This five-year project, funded with €5.4 million, will involve the appointment of five PhDs and a postdoctoral researcher.

The research will focus on safe, reliable, and affordable hydrogen carriers, assessing their storage performance in terms of release, uptake, toxicity, hydrogen content, and material characteristics. Notably, the study will include newly established, less-studied hydrogen carriers.

Under Slootweg’s supervision, a PhD student at HIMS will perform a technology readiness assessment of suitable hydrogen carriers. This work will be complemented by a PhD student at the University of Twente, who will assess the technology readiness of import terminals for these carriers.

The research is carried out in cooperation with industry partners Voyex and HyET E-Trol and supported by industry partners Gasunie and Aliaxis.
