President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has initiated the establishment of a green hydrogen production facility in Chirchik, Uzbekistan.

The ambitious project, as reported by Azernews citing Kun.uz News Agency, aims to achieve an annual production capacity of 3,000 tons of green hydrogen based on the existing ammonia plant.

The primary goal of this initiative is to leverage green hydrogen production to drive the creation of mineral fertilizers. The first stage involves the installation of wind turbines with a capacity of 52 MW in the Bukhara region, enabling the production of 3,000 tons of hydrogen per year. The long-term vision includes scaling up wind turbine capacity to a staggering 2.4 GW, resulting in the annual production of 500,000 tons of green ammonia from green hydrogen.

Uzkimyosanoat JSC, in collaboration with Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power Company, spearheads this green hydrogen production endeavor. The project adopts cutting-edge technologies from the Chinese company LONGi, showcasing international collaboration in the pursuit of sustainable energy solutions.

One of the notable outcomes of producing mineral fertilizers through green hydrogen is the potential for increased market value. Fertilizers manufactured using green energy methods are projected to command a premium of 15-20% in the global market. The integration of environmentally safe energy practices in Uzbekistan is anticipated to elevate the country’s products on the world stage, attracting more buyers.

The adoption of green energy in the fertilizer production process is expected to significantly reduce reliance on natural gas. Once fully operational, the project could save approximately 33 million cubic meters of natural gas annually. This shift aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and foster sustainable industrial practices.
