Van den Herik Orders Hydrogen Fuel Cell Genset from zepp.solutions for Its Crane Vessel

Van den Herik-Sliedrecht, a Dutch hydraulic engineering company, has placed an order with zepp.solutions to develop a hydrogen fuel cell generator set for its battery-electric crane vessel, the Prins 6.

The generator, based on zepp.solutions’ X150 fuel cell system, will initially power the Prins 6 during dredging and embankment work under an assignment for the Dutch Department of Waterways and Public Works (Rijkswaterstaat).

In its first phase of deployment, the hydrogen generator set will operate from quays along the IJssel River, providing clean energy for the Prins 6 and additional equipment such as electric excavators. The Prins 6, equipped with fully electric propulsion, is a crane barge used primarily for dredging operations. Van den Herik’s use of zepp.solutions’ hydrogen technology highlights its commitment to sustainable project execution, even in traditionally emission-heavy sectors.

The hydrogen-powered generator is expected to achieve significant environmental benefits. Van den Herik projects annual reductions of 165 tonnes of CO2 equivalent and 2 tonnes of nitrogen emissions from the deployment of the Prins 6. Additionally, noise pollution is minimized, aligning with both Van den Herik’s and Rijkswaterstaat’s sustainability objectives.

The project was designated as a Leader project by the TPKV (Transition Path Coastline Care and Fairway Maintenance) program, which promotes innovative and sustainable approaches in waterway maintenance. The final approval for the initiative was granted in close collaboration with Rijkswaterstaat.

The purchase agreement between Van den Herik and zepp.solutions was finalized at the InfraTech exhibition in Rotterdam. The signing ceremony featured representatives from both companies and Rijkswaterstaat, including Isolde Struijk and Jan Huijbers (Van den Herik management), Roger Mol (Chief Sustainability Director and CPO, Rijkswaterstaat), and Arne de Kock and Lennart van der Ploeg (zepp.solutions).
