VERBUND AG, in collaboration with project partner LAT Nitrogen, is spearheading the Green Ammonia Linz project. This initiative, centered in Linz, Austria, aims to leverage green hydrogen for the large-scale production of fertilizers, melamine, and technical nitrogen.

The project aligns with the European Green Deal and the Austrian Hydrogen Strategy, demonstrating a commitment to decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors.

The primary objective of the Green Ammonia Linz project is to revolutionize ammonia production by substituting grey hydrogen, derived from natural gas, with green hydrogen produced through renewable electricity. Recognizing the environmental impact of current ammonia production processes, the project aims to reduce annual CO2 emissions significantly.

At the core of this joint venture is a 60 MW industrial-scale electrolysis plant developed by VERBUND AG. This facility will harness electricity from renewable sources and deionized water to produce green hydrogen. The green hydrogen, in turn, becomes the foundational raw material for the sustainable production of fertilizers, technical nitrogen, and melamine. The innovative process also utilizes the oxygen generated during water electrolysis in additional production processes, contributing to operational efficiency.

Recognizing the significance of the Green Ammonia Linz project, the European Commission’s Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and Environment (CINEA) has granted financial support of EUR 48.5 million through the Innovation Fund’s third call for large-scale projects. With a planned electrolysis capacity of 60 MW and an annual production target of up to 7,000 tons of green hydrogen, the project anticipates replacing around 10% of current grey hydrogen usage and reducing annual CO2 emissions by up to 90,000 tons.
