Green hydrogen is being developed and will eventually be produced at a site close to our eastern neighbors by VoltH2. The country’s only deep-water port and energy hub, Wilhelmshaven, will house the first German facility.

In Europe, VoltH2 is constructing a network of eco-friendly hydrogen power stations. Vlissingen, Terneuzen, and Delfzijl will be home to the first three branches. In Vlissingen and Terneuzen, the business already possesses the necessary permissions for output up to 170 MW. Delfzijl will further enhance the capacity to 230 to 300 MW, for which the permit has been applied. VoltH2 is currently operational in Germany thanks to this fourth facility in Wilhelmshaven. A deal was reached between VoltH2 and NPorts (Niedersachsen Ports) for the use of a four-hectare site.

VoltH2 and NPorts had their first conversations in June 2022. VoltH2’s managing director, André Jurres: “Our objective has always been to build and run a network of green hydrogen plants across Europe. Our first German website is now live. And that at a port that is fast becoming Germany’s energy powerhouse “.

Germany is emphasizing the importance of green hydrogen in meeting the 2050 climate goals. The goal is to mix domestic manufacturing with imports, which Wilhelmshaven can do in both capacities.

Business Development Manager for Germany, Tobias Breitbach, explains why the north German port was chosen: “Wilhelmshaven offers ideal circumstances for the installation of big electrolyzers in addition to the terminals that are planned for the import of green hydrogen and green ammonia. There are underground gas storage facilities nearby, and a link to the long-distance hydrogen network is planned. Not to mention the nearby offshore wind farms and their clean electricity. Wilhelmshaven will develop into a center for renewable energy and a focal point for the energy transition. That Wilhelmshaven was on our wish list makes sense “.

Building on the plant is scheduled to begin in 2026. A capacity of up to 100 MW is anticipated at start-up. Antoine Jurres “Understanding the regional market is essential to carry out these objectives. We established a German GmbH as a result at the start of 2023. Project managers and a business development manager are also being added to the German team. Wilhelmshaven is just the beginning of our initiatives in Germany.”
