Vysus Group contracted to provide risk consulting expertise for a remarkable green hydrogen production and refilling station in Spain

Global engineering and technology company, Vysus Group, has secured a contract to deliver a range of technical safety and risk studies for a new hydrogen refilling station in Spain.

Iberdrola plans to build the facility in the Port of Barcelona, Spain in November 2021. The plant will produce, store and supply hydrogen to heavy vehicles – specifically Barcelona Metropolitan Transport buses. Initially, it will produce 160kg of hydrogen per day, increasing production to 1,200 kg per day. The project is currently in the design and purchasing stage.

Vysus Group has been commissioned to deliver a Hazard Identification study (HAZID), consequence modelling and a Quantitative Risk Analysis (QRA), as well as a Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) and Safety Integrity Level (SIL) studies.

During the design phase, these studies will help evaluate associated risks, and identify safeguards to prevent or mitigate the consequences of any potential incident. The QRA will determine whether major accident risks are acceptable according to relevant regulatory standards and best practice.

“Establishing a full-scale green hydrogen facility in a non-industrial environment – in this case in the Port of Barcelona – represents a challenge. Iberdrola wants to ensure that the safety and any risks associated with the plant are systematically managed using good practices. By seeking our technical advice, the client can incorporate the maximum inherent safety approaches into its design. Ultimately, the output from our technical advice should demonstrate a safe design and address any concerns by third parties.”
