Windcat Offshore has initiated the launch of an innovative hydrogen-powered vessel at Ha Long Shipbuilding in Vietnam.

This marks the first in a series of six commissioning service operation vessels (CSOVs) commissioned by the Dutch company.

The design of these CSOVs is a joint effort between Windcat and CMB.Tech, a Belgian engineering company. Each vessel in the series will measure 87 by 20 meters, offering ample space for 120 occupants. These vessels boast an impressive endurance, capable of 30 days at sea without resupply.

A key feature of these new CSOVs is their hybrid electric propulsion system, primarily powered by hydrogen. This system eliminates the need for diesel generators as backups, ensuring that the vessel uses only the power it requires. Additionally, the vessel will have the capacity for offshore charging, enhancing operational efficiency.

The first vessel in the series, set to be named Windcat Rotterdam, will now undergo the outfitting and commissioning process. Completion and delivery are planned for the second quarter of 2025.
