Woodside has secured property in Tasmania for its projected H2TAS hydrogen plant.
The land is a largely cleared plot located in the Austrak Business Park (Long Reach) in northern Tasmania’s Bell Bay region. Woodside and Austrak have reached an agreement on an exclusive long-term leasing option.
The H2TAS project consists of approximately 1.7 GW of electrolysis for the generation of hydrogen and ammonia, which will be completed in phases. In the first phase, a 300 MW capacity would be used to produce 200k tonnes of ammonia per year.
It anticipates making a final investment decision in 2023, with construction and commissioning taking around 24 months. H2TAS would utilize hydropower and wind energy to produce 100 percent renewable ammonia for export and renewable hydrogen for domestic usage.
In January 2021, Woodside signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the State of Tasmania for the H2TAS Project, recognizing the value of building a hydrogen hub in the Bell Bay area utilizing renewable energy.
In May 2021, Woodside announced a joint venture with Japanese businesses Marubeni Corporation and IHI Corporation. The parties have conducted preliminary feasibility studies and determined that ammonia export from the Bell Bay area to Japan is technically and commercially feasible.
