The world’s first hydrogen-powered Light Rail Vehicle (LRV) line in China has been suspended. This project is recognized as the “first commercial hydrogen-powered tram in the world.” According to local media, the operator stopped services due to low passenger demand.

The line, launched by Gaoming Modern Rail (GMR) in 2019, features a 6.5 km route and costs USD 118 million. It is located in Foshan, southern China, and connects the city center to Guangzhou South railway station, serving ten stops.

CRRC Qingdao Sifang manufactured the trains, and Ballard supplied the hydrogen fuel cells. CRRC Qingdao Sifang holds a 20 percent stake in GMR.

A more detailed evaluation will be conducted to determine when the tram can resume operations.
