The Central Queensland Hydrogen (CQ-H2) Project’s front-end engineering and design (FEED) work has been given to Worley.

The project is the largest investment in a renewable hydrogen project in Australia to date and is being headed by Stanwell Corporation Limited and its consortium partners, Iwatani Corporation, Kansai Electric Power Company, Marubeni, and Keppel Infrastructure. At the pre-FID stage, it also ranks among the top 10 hydrogen projects worldwide.

Initially, the project aims to build up to 640 MW of electrolyzers and generate up to 200 tonnes of gaseous renewable hydrogen per day, with offtakers buying the gas to convert into renewable ammonia or liquified hydrogen. The project also plans to supply big domestic clients in Central Queensland with renewable hydrogen via its various carriers, as well as deliver it to Singapore and Japan.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), the Queensland Government, and the Queensland Renewable Energy and Hydrogen Jobs Fund all provided financial support for the project. At its peak, the project is anticipated to generate over 8,900 new jobs, generate $17.2 billion in hydrogen exports, and boost Queensland’s Gross State Product by $12.4 billion over a 30-year period.

Beginning in 2028, commercial operations are anticipated. If the project is successful, it will progress to full-scale operations with an electrolyzer capacity of about 2,240 MW, producing 800 tonnes of gaseous renewable hydrogen per day by 2031.
