The H2ME2 (Hydrogen Mobility Europe) and ZEFER (Zero Emission taxi Fleets for European Rollout) projects, both funded by Europe’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership, have deployed 100 hydrogen taxis in Copenhagen with app-based taxi company DRIVR.
Following the installation and opening of a new hydrogen refueling station (HRS) in the city, the Toyota Mirais now run on green hydrogen generated from renewable energy.
With the latest taxi deployments in three capital cities, the ZEFER project has reached its full complement of 180 FCEVs in high-utilisation, captive fleets across Europe (Paris, London and Copenhagen). The taxis in Copenhagen will join 60 taxis previously dispatched to Hype by STEP in Paris, as well as 60 other passenger cars shared by Green Tomato Cars (50) and the Metropolitan Police in London (10).
To date, the 120 vehicles in the ZEFER project have covered over 7 million kilometers solely on hydrogen fuel. This high mileage is possible because the project focuses on applications that require a lot of daily mileage and are best suited to hydrogen vehicles. They’ve done it without any major safety or reliability issues, and drivers and fleet managers have praised the vehicle’s performance, with few breakdowns or issues directly related to the hydrogen drivetrain.
By 2030, the Danish government wants all taxis to be zero-emission, and DRIVR won a public tender to provide ad-hoc taxi services in Copenhagen. DRIVR’s existing low-emission fleet, which includes hybrid, electric, and hydrogen vehicles, will be supplemented by the 100 new hydrogen taxis.
