Vattenfall will begin the construction of Klaverspoor wind farm in the province of Noord Brabant in the Netherlands next to the A16 motorway.

Vattenfall starts Klaverspoor wind farm construction

The project requires an investment amounting to €45 million. Of this number, twenty-five percent will come from the Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij (Development Company of Brabant, BOM).

“Vattenfall wants to make fossil-free living possible within one generation, but of course we don’t do that alone. The ‘Energy A16’ project is truly unique in the positive sense of the word in its interaction and relationship with landowners, local residents and the competent authority.

“Over the past four years, we have worked closely with the local residents, the province of Noord-Brabant and BOM to develop the wind farm. Thanks to this collaboration, the people in the surrounding area have been able to discuss the project and will be able to benefit from it in the future. The installation of solar panels on houses of local residents, made possible by the wind farm last spring, is a good example of this. Only together will we make this project a success and we will continue to be committed to this during construction and operation.”

Luc Dekkers, project manager.

One of the five wind farms that are being developed along the A16 motorway is Klaverspoor wind farm. An appeal was filed with the Council of State against the building of the wind turbines along the A16. In July 2020, the appeals-those applicable to Klaverspoor-were ruled unfounded by the Council of State.

The Council of State, however, ruled that a number of elements in the A16 Wind Energy Adaptation Plan still need to be revised by the province of Noord Brabant. This entails modifications along the A16 for other wind farms.

The Council of State ‘s decision has no repercussions for the design of the Klaverspoor. That is why, before taking an investment decision, Vattenfall chose not to wait for the final decision of the Council of State.

The six Klaverspoor wind turbines will be situated along the A16 in the Binnen-Moerdijk Polder. In November 2020, the first on-site work will begin in Vattenfall: plans for the building of a road towards a new railway crossing.

All structural engineering, such as the building of roads, cranes, cables and wind farm foundations, will be carried out by the construction company Heijmans. The six turbines of type N149/5X, with a height of 135 meters, will be supplied and installed by wind turbine producer Nordex Group.

The first renewable electricity will be generated by Klaverspoor in the second half of 2022. The installed capacity of the wind farm is estimated to be 34,2 MW; the quantity of electricity generated annually by these six wind turbines will be supplied to businesses and consumers and could be compared with the average annual usage of about 30,000 households in the Netherlands.
