Germany: private homes to have solar-hydrogen-based power supply

HPS Home Power Solutions GmbH, situated in Berlin, and Wohnwerke GmbH, a builder and architect, have formed a cooperation to create environmentally friendly private homes.

Picea, HPS’ hydrogen-based electricity storage technology, will be standard equipment for all one-family homes built by Wohnwerke. A demonstration house in Asperglen-Rudersberg, near Stuttgart, will be built soon to showcase the mix of modern architecture and advanced energy systems.

Picea allows year-round, carbon-free, and independent power supply for one- and two-family dwellings using solar energy and unique power-to-gas hydrogen technology. In this category, HPS has the first marketable solution in the world. The picea system also reduces the amount of energy necessary to heat a home by utilizing the full process heat from energy generation, storage, and use. Picea has a high overall utilization rate of over 90%.

Picea has a storage capacity that is more than 100 times that of current house batteries. For the first time, the method allows hydrogen technology to be employed readily and efficiently in individual residences, potentially contributing significantly to climate preservation. The show house will highlight HPS’ technological market leadership as well as picea’s devotion and dependability. It exemplifies Wohnwerke’s desire to provide high-quality homes with their own power source while also contributing to climate protection.

Zeyad Abul-Ella, Managing Director of HPS Home Power Solutions, comments: “After the successful start of production of picea, we are very pleased to announce an attractive partner for the distribution of our innovative storage system. Wohnwerke stands for high-quality, modern and ecological living design and therefore fits perfectly with our forward-looking and practical energy solution.”

Lucas Neddermann, managing director of Wohnwerke, adds: “Our customers are quality and environmentally conscious and are looking for climate-friendly living solutions. We are therefore very pleased to have found the partner with the innovative picea system with whom we are able to realize an energy self-sufficient building. Together with HPS, we are taking a pioneering role in the future market of hydrogen-based energy storage in private homes.”
