The Green Party’s Winfried Kretschmann wants Baden-Württemberg to be a leader in hydrogen and fuel cell technology.
The state is prepared to fund corresponding projects with up to 358 million euros in order to advance technology quickly. The projects of Cellcentric (Daimler / Volvo), ElringKlinger, Freudenberg, DaimlerTrucks, and Bosch must also receive federal government support.
Kretschmann and Environment Minister Thekla Walker (Greens) want to provide information on the subject. If both Daimler and Volvo decide to build a fuel cell “gigafactory” in the southwest, the largest chunk of funding could go to the Cellcentric joint venture: a total of 602 million euros would flow, with 181 million coming from the country.
Above all, “green” hydrogen, which is produced using green electricity, should play a key role in the economy’s climate-friendly restructuring of production processes, or in the energy transition away from fossil fuels such as coal and gas. The “green” hydrogen will be used to make synthetic fuels in cars, as a fuel in fuel cell vehicles, and as a raw material in the industry, among other things.
A large European hydrogen alliance will include 62 German projects. The state will contribute more than eight billion euros to the projects.
