Hyundai Motor Company has inked a MOU with Hyundai Electric & Energy Systems Co. (Hyundai Electric) to develop a hydrogen fuel cell package for mobile power generation.
The MOU was signed online by Saehoon Kim, head of the Hyundai Motor Group Fuel Cell Center, and Seok Cho, president and CEO of Hyundai Electric.
The venture combines Hyundai Motor’s decades of fuel cell technology with Hyundai Electric’s competence in power equipment. Under the terms of the agreement, the two parties will work together to develop a hydrogen fuel cell package aimed at mobile power generators and alternative maritime power (AMP) supply solutions, based on Hyundai Motor’s polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system, which is used in Hyundai Motor’s fuel cell vehicles.
The new fuel cell-powered package system is likely to disrupt the mobile generator market, which is now dominated by diesel generators. Environmentally friendly, distributed power systems, such as the one envisaged, can provide carbon-neutral electric needs across a wide range of industrial sectors, including port facilities, building sites, and industrial complexes.
Hyundai Motor will offer PEMFC fuel cell equipment and technical support under the arrangement, while Hyundai Electric will develop and commercialize a fuel cell-based power generating package that comprises mobile generators and AMP supply systems. Hyundai Electric will also investigate various business strategies for promoting the new bundle both in Korea and abroad.
