NEXO has joined Queensland Police as part of the state’s deployment of five Hyundai hydrogen fuel cell electric cars.

NEXO will be dressed in the Queensland Police Service’s eye-catching body wrap, lights, and sirens.

The deployment will allow the Queensland Police Service to gain firsthand experience with the unique benefits of a zero-emissions FCEV while also demonstrating the technology to the general public.

It establishes NEXO as Australia’s and the Southern Hemisphere’s first fuel-cell police vehicle, demonstrating Hyundai and the Queensland government’s commitment to hydrogen.

The Queensland government’s Brisbane hydrogen station will offer the infrastructure necessary to refuel NEXO with locally produced hydrogen.

The futuristic NEXO SUV is Australia’s first hydrogen-powered vehicle, and the addition of the Queensland Police and government NEXOs brings the national fleet to 28 vehicles, including the 20 NEXOs scheduled to be delivered to the ACT government and emergency services in 2020, as well as the NEXOs stationed at Hyundai’s Sydney headquarters.

The Queensland Police NEXO deployment serves as a high-profile milestone in the implementation of Australia’s National Hydrogen Strategy, which intends to position Australia at the forefront of the global hydrogen sector by 2030.

Jun Heo, Chief Executive Officer of Hyundai Motor Company Australia, stated that Hyundai is thrilled to see its advanced hydrogen technology implemented by the Queensland Police Service as another step toward a sustainable automotive future.

“Deploying NEXO into the Queensland Police Service provides a terrific opportunity for police to experience the unique benefits of our zero-emission hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicle while showcasing the technology to the public,” Mr. Heo said.

Hyundai is the first brand in Australia to provide hydrogen fuel cell electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid (IONIQ) vehicles, as well as battery electric vehicles (IONIQ, Kona EV, and the COTY-winning IONIQ 5).

NEXO has a range of 666 kilometers (WLTP) and a refueling period of three to five minutes, all packaged in a futuristic compact SUV that purifies the air as it drives by producing only water vapour from its exhaust.

The NEXO, with a five-star safety rating from ANCAP, is Australia’s first government-certified fuel-cell electric vehicle for on-road use, from the firm that pioneered mass production FCEVs.

NEXO, Hyundai’s second-generation mass production fuel cell vehicle, blends clean mobility with cutting-edge autonomous driving capabilities and intelligent enhanced driver aid features.
