Gilchinglocated Torqeedo and Proton Motor Fuel Cell have announced a new clean and green initiative.

Torqeedo is a world leader in electric mobility on water as a member of the DEUTZ Group, offering electric and hybrid drives ranging from 0.5 to 100 kW for commercial and recreational use. Both businesses are collaborating on an unique hydrogen hybrid propulsion system construction kit for maritime mobility that will be capable of delivering 30 to 120 kW of fuel cell power and variable hydrogen storage capacity. The project, dubbed “MaHy-Hy” (Marine-Hydrogen-Hybrid), will add fuel cell technology to Torqeedo’s existing “Deep Blue Hybrid” range of driving systems. Proton Motor stated in early November 2021 that the project will receive formal program financing from the Bavarian federal government until 2024.

The cash will be used to create a maritime high-voltage hybrid propulsion system comprised of a hydrogen fuel cell and a battery. The ground-breaking emission-free drive system is intended for use in inland and offshore applications globally and is designated with the following technical specifications: Between 30 and 120 kW of fuel cell power, 50 to 200 kW of propulsion power, 40 to 160 kWh of battery capacity, and any size of hydrogen storage. Additionally, during the “Ma-Hy-Hy” duration, Proton Motor wants to further adapt and optimize components of their fuel cell systems for maritime applications. In this context, testing and validation of a prototype trial system will take undertaken on a test bench at the partnership partner Torqeedo. Following the successful conclusion of the project, joint sales and marketing efforts, as well as moves toward industrialization, are planned.
