German’s GETEC to use UAE-produced hydrogen

The GETEC Group was one of the first German companies to sign a cooperation agreement with the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) for the use of hydrogen produced in the UAE.

This promising energy will be transported in the form of ammonia in order to reach Europe efficiently. The signing took place in Abu Dhabi during a business delegation led by German Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck, which included GETEC. Following an initial test delivery of blue ammonia, the collaboration will be expanded to include the supply of green ammonia, which can be reformed into green hydrogen in Europe and is produced entirely with renewable energy.

Blue ammonia will be delivered first in order to set up the logistics structures for clean hydrogen import into Germany as quickly as possible. Blue ammonia is made from natural gas as a hydrogen carrier, but unlike gray hydrogen, the CO2 produced in the process is not released into the atmosphere but instead stored. The hydrolysis of water using electricity generated from renewable sources produces green hydrogen or ammonia.

Building clean energy powerhouse

The UAE announced in December 2021 that it would build a global clean energy powerhouse to help the country achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. ADNOC, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC (TAQA), and Mubadala Investment Company (Mubadala) will collaborate under the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) brand, combining their efforts in renewable energy and green hydrogen. The partnership between three Abu Dhabi champions will have a combined current, committed, and exclusive renewable energy capacity of over 23 Gigawatts (GW), with the goal of reaching well over 50 GW total capacity by 2030 and plans to increase this figure.

Green ammonia can be used as a carbon-free fuel in a variety of industries, including transportation, power generation, refineries, and chemical, steel, wastewater treatment, cement, and fertilizer manufacturing.
