Topsoe will construct a big facility in Herning for the generation of green hydrogen. The company expects the project to cost roughly two billion kroner.
“It is the world’s first factory of its sort and Topsoe’s greatest single investment,” CEO Roeland Baan told the press. “We anticipate a massive demand in the next 25 years.”
The plant’s objective is to generate the equivalent of 0.5 gigawatts per year, around 0.3 gigawatts of electrolysis capacity had been deployed globally by the end of 2020.
The factory, however, may be tight up to five gigawatts in the long term, according to the director.
At the same time, he applauds the recent signing of a joint statement by the heads of government of Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Denmark to deliver at least 65 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030 and boost capacity to at least 150 gigawatts by 2050.
The facility, which is set to open in 2024, is estimated to create 170 new employment. It will be erected in Herning on a 72,000 square meter property.
For a year, Topsoe has been looking for the ideal spot. The corporation has considered locations in five other countries, as well as four or five potential locations in Denmark.
Topsoe, originally Haldor Topsoe, dropped the founder’s first name, Haldor, from the company’s name in April of this year. In Frederikssund, the firm already has a major catalyst facility.
