The European Commission announced the formation of a specialist energy working group to assist the EU Energy Platform and carry out the goals of the REPower EU plan, which aims to reduce Russia’s reliance on fossil fuels by 2030.
The goal of this new working group will be to assist the EU Member States and surrounding countries in gaining cheap access to alternative energy in the next years, a task that will be carried out in collaboration with the EU Energy Platform.
“We highlight how Europe can divest itself of Russian fossil fuels in our REPower EU initiative. “Now is the moment to diversify our energy source and make the greatest use of our infrastructure,” Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson said in a statement.
The working group will begin meeting on June 1 to address the goals of the REPower EU plan, which was launched in May, with a focus on demand aggregation, storage coordination, and energy supply negotiation.
The task force, which will focus on worldwide demand and negotiations, is made up of three units: Director General Matthew Baldwin, Director General for Energy Ditte Juul Jorgensen, and Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson. Ties between the Member States and their neighbors, as well as international relations.
Last March, the Community Executive recommended establishing a platform for community-wide gas and hydrogen purchases in order to reduce excessive energy prices.
