NERSA extends consultation on hydrogen strategy

The deadline for comments on the consultation paper for the creation of the energy plan has been extended by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).

The last day to submit comments is January 13, 2023. In order to achieve a coordinated development of gas alongside renewable energy and hydrogen in the South African energy markets, NERSA is seeking input from stakeholders.

They are particularly interested in learning more about the present gas reality in the changing energy transition scenario. In order to determine the best course of action for advancing the development of the gas business in South Africa, they also wish to investigate relevant prospects and obstacles.

The NERSA will use the data gathered during this consultation process to help design the strategy. This data won’t be specifically assigned to any one stakeholder; rather, it will represent a general evaluation of the arguments made by stakeholders.

LeeWay and WESI bring hydrogen fuel for marine applications to Atlantic Canada

Together, LeeWay Marine and Waterford Energy Services (WESI) are bringing a source of hydrogen fuel for marine applications to Atlantic Canada.

Early front-end engineering and design (E-FEED), according to the two Canadian businesses, has started on a Phase 1 Pilot. Strategic areas have been determined by the collaboration for the delivery of shore-based hydrogen fuel supply.

Additionally, the viability of fuel conversion has been investigated for opportunity vessels. Construction at one or more locations is scheduled to be finished by 2025, subject to regulatory agency approvals, and detailed engineering and design are anticipated to be finished by the fourth quarter of 2023.

The collaboration’s goals include creating a center of competence for marine fuel source conversions, designing and constructing power to X fuel resources, like hydrogen, reducing supply chain risk, improving regulatory processes, and forming alliances with groups like COVE (Center for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship).

NTPC begins green hydrogen blending project in India

In collaboration with Gujarat Gas, NTPC has begun blending green hydrogen in the piped natural gas (PNG) network at NTPC Kawas Township, Surat (GGL).

In the presence of several top executives from NTPC Kawas and GGL, P. Ram Prasad, the project’s head of operations, started the first molecule of green hydrogen from the plant.

With the assistance of GGL officials, NTPC Kawas conducted awareness sessions for township residents following the start of the blending process.

Following the laying of the foundation stone by the Prime Minister of India on July 30, 2022, NTPC and GGL worked diligently to reach this milestone in a record amount of time. The homes in Kawas Township in Adityanagar, Surat, will receive H2-NG gas from this setup. In Kawas, green hydrogen is produced by electrolyzing water with power from an existing 1 MW floating solar project.

Iberdrola supplies green hydrogen to CAF for FCH2Rail in Zaragoza

In order to conduct on-track dynamic tests of the hydrogen-powered demonstrator train for the FCH2Rail project, Iberdrola has finished supplying green hydrogen to CAF in Zaragoza.

Transporting hydrogen from Iberdrola’s hydrogen plant in Barcelona’s Zona Franca, the first to be licensed for commercial use in Spain, to Zaragoza and installing a dispensing system that allowed the train’s tanks to be loaded with the highest levels of operability and safety were the components of the solution for supplying hydrogen.

For distribution in a commercial hydrogen station with these features, green hydrogen has never before been recharged in a semi-trailer. These tests confirm Iberdrola and CAF’s dedication to promoting the use of green hydrogen in passenger transportation and the railway industry. This alliance was formed because both companies were committed to providing all-inclusive sustainable mobility solutions, from the provision of rolling stock and refueling infrastructure to green hydrogen production facilities and renewable energy infrastructures.

The company plans to supply green hydrogen to CAF for this project and others that will be developed by other companies from the future hydrogen plant of the Green Mobility PLAZA project, in a region that is a pioneer in research thanks to the work of the Aragon Hydrogen Foundation. Iberdrola’s first supply of green hydrogen to CAF confirms Iberdrola’s interest in driving the development chain in the region.
