Uniper and Greenko Group signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and Heads of Terms to negotiate the exclusive offtake of green ammonia from Phase 1 of Greenko ZeroC’s ammonia manufacturing facility in Kakinada.
According to the MoU, Greenko and Uniper seek to establish a supply, tenure, and pricing structure that is unique in the industry for a supply and purchase agreement for 250,000 tonnes of green ammonia annually (GASPA) based on the Heads of Terms.
The Kakinada project by Greenko consists of several phases and will add up to 1 MTPA of green ammonia production capacity by 2027. Based on an electrolyser driven by Round the Clock (RTC) renewable electricity generated by 2.5 GW of renewable assets in India and reinforced by their Pinnapuram Integrated Renewable Energy Storage Plant, the first phase of Greenko’s facility in Kakinada creates green ammonia (IRESP).
Integration of pumped storage
The integration of a pumped storage plant, which achieves an annual plant load factor of up to 85% and enables flexible and competitive supply of Green Ammonia, is the main differentiator that distinguishes this project from others. It balances out the intermittent and seasonal nature of renewable production.
In addition to working together to develop Green Ammonia, Uniper and Greenko want to develop equivalent flexible renewable electricity for Sustainable Aviation Fuels and E-Methanol.
