The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping (RS) has announced its endorsement of the CryoSafe-42 project by N2 Tec, which aims to develop a tank container of UN T75 type for the temporary storage and transportation of cooled liquid hydrogen.

The container, featuring screen-vacuum insulation, will facilitate the movement of liquid hydrogen via sea, river, road, and rail transport. RS is responsible for approving the technical documentation for the tank container’s use in multimodal transportation and providing consulting services for its design, manufacturing, and pilot testing. The project aligns with international standards for the transportation of dangerous goods, as approved by the United Nations.

Anton Kovalevsky, the General Director of N2 Tec, emphasized the collaborative nature of the CryoSafe-42 project, combining the expertise of N2 Tec LLC and the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping. He stated that the project’s successful implementation would unlock new opportunities for the development of a hydrogen economy, stimulate technological progress, and promote innovative business solutions.

Sergey Kulikov, the General Director of the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, highlighted the value gained from participating in the project, stating that the experience acquired contributes to the organization’s knowledge and skills in supporting new technological advancements in the liquefied gas transportation and storage domain.

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping, established in 1913, is a prominent classification society involved in various aspects of the maritime industry. The Register’s key objectives include enhancing safety standards for maritime operations, promoting safe navigation practices, ensuring the safe carriage of goods by sea and inland waters, and developing measures to prevent environmental pollution.

RS offers a range of services, including technical appraisal and certification for ships, offshore installations, machinery, equipment, and containers. They also provide tonnage measurement, compliance surveys for international conventions, certification of industrial products and processes, and quality management system certification in line with ISO International Standards. Additionally, RS conducts technical supervision of various types of cargo containers.
