GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet Unite to Drive Energy Transition in Europe

Polish natural gas transmission system operator GAZ-SYSTEM and Danish TSO Energinet have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation, solidifying their commitment to driving the energy transition and strengthening regional energy security in Europe.

The agreement, signed during the Baltic Pipe gala event, highlights the operators’ focus on decarbonization through green gases and the development of low and zero-carbon energy sources such as biomethane and hydrogen.

The primary goal of the collaboration between GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet is to ensure a secure and uninterrupted supply of natural gas through the Baltic Pipe gas pipeline. Both operators also aim to leverage the spare capacity of Baltic Pipe by engaging market participants in the Baltic Sea region, Central and Eastern Europe, and Ukraine. Furthermore, they have pledged to align their efforts with the EU’s climate objectives by formulating and implementing national policies and strategies in the realm of energy transition.

To achieve their objectives, GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet will collaborate with international industry organizations and establish specialized joint working groups. These groups will focus on various research and development areas, including Baltic Pipe, biomethane, and hydrogen, to drive innovation and implement necessary measures.

In addition to their immediate goals, the operators have committed to collaborating on the sectoral priorities of the upcoming Polish and Danish presidencies of the Council of the European Union in 2025. This collaboration demonstrates their dedication to shaping the energy landscape at a regional and European level.

The successful completion and operation of the Baltic Pipe pipeline last year serve as a testament to the fruitful cooperation between GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet. The pipeline connects Norwegian gas pipelines in the North Sea to the Danish and Polish gas systems, ensuring a reliable and diversified gas supply across Denmark and the Baltic Sea region.

The new Memorandum of Cooperation builds upon the joint political declaration made by Baltic Sea countries in August 2022. In this declaration, Poland, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Denmark pledged to enhance cooperation in energy supply and the development of green energy. The collaboration between GAZ-SYSTEM and Energinet is a significant step towards realizing the shared vision of a sustainable and secure energy future in Europe.
