Jordan is making significant strides in promoting the development of its green hydrogen production sector with the ambitious goal of establishing itself as a regional hub. Saleh Kharabsheh, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, highlighted this objective during a workshop titled “Discussing Green Hydrogen Strategy in Jordan.”

The workshop, held in cooperation with the USAID Energy Sector Support Activity, aimed to formulate a comprehensive strategy for the use and production of green hydrogen in the country.

The workshop marks a crucial step in Jordan’s efforts to enhance sustainability and leverage its local resources within the energy sector. It aligns with the country’s Economic Modernization Vision for 2023 and underscores the ministry’s commitment to fulfilling its requirements.

To ensure a well-informed strategy, the ministry has been assessing the findings and recommendations of previous studies conducted in the green hydrogen industry. These studies have focused on various aspects, including potential sources of future demand, export opportunities, key customers, and investment requirements.

The workshop provided a platform for key stakeholders to contribute their insights and address important considerations for the sector’s development. Partners engaged in discussions surrounding the main activities necessary for sector growth, partner requirements, and challenges faced by green hydrogen consumers.

The pursuit of a robust green hydrogen industry in Jordan holds significant promise and potential impact. Green hydrogen, produced through electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources, offers a clean and versatile energy solution. It can be utilized across various sectors, including transportation, industry, and power generation, facilitating the transition to a low-carbon economy and reducing dependence on fossil fuels.

By establishing itself as a regional hub for green hydrogen production, Jordan can position itself as a leader in the renewable energy sector. This status would not only attract investment and create employment opportunities but also contribute to the country’s energy security and environmental sustainability.

However, Jordan faces challenges on its path to becoming a green hydrogen hub. The development of robust renewable energy infrastructure, including solar and wind power generation, is crucial to provide the necessary renewable energy for electrolysis. Additionally, building the required hydrogen production and distribution infrastructure, as well as ensuring cost competitiveness, are important considerations.

Nevertheless, with strategic planning, collaboration with international partners, and continued support from organizations like the USAID Energy Sector Support Activity, Jordan is well-positioned to capitalize on the immense potential of green hydrogen. The formulation of a comprehensive strategy will provide a roadmap for the country’s green hydrogen industry, outlining key priorities and driving its sustainable development.
