Masdar and INPEX have joined forces to conduct a joint study on the feasibility of producing synthetic methane (e-methane) using green hydrogen and CO2.
The collaboration aims to explore the entire value chain of e-methane production, including hydrogen production, CO2 procurement, manufacturing, and transportation. The agreement was announced during the JAPAN-UAE Business Forum in the presence of Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and HH Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, showcasing the commitment of both nations to carbon reduction and the development of sustainable energy solutions.
E-methane, or synthetic methane, offers a versatile and carbon-neutral fuel option. It can be easily distributed through existing city gas infrastructure and does not require significant modifications to consumer systems. This makes it an attractive solution for industries and sectors where electrification is challenging. E-methane has applications in power generation and transportation, paving the way for cleaner energy use and reduced carbon emissions.
The collaboration between Masdar and INPEX will encompass a detailed examination of the entire e-methane value chain. This includes assessing hydrogen production methods, securing CO2 feedstock, and analyzing the economic viability of establishing a methanation business in Abu Dhabi for potential export to Japan.
