SunHydrogen, a leading developer of renewable hydrogen production technology, has announced a significant partnership with COTEC to explore the development and optimization of industrial electroplating solutions.

This collaboration aims to enhance SunHydrogen’s semiconductor deposition, a crucial component of the company’s nanoparticle technology. With COTEC’s expertise in electroplating and electrochemical processes, this partnership holds tremendous potential for advancing the scale-up process and driving the global adoption of renewable hydrogen.

SunHydrogen’s breakthrough technology utilizes patented Photoelectrosynthetically Active Heterostructure (PAH) nanoparticles to split water into hydrogen and oxygen using sunlight. These nanoparticles, consisting of multiple layers of solar cells, exhibit high-voltage and high-light absorbing properties. This enables the creation of ultrathin solar cells with reduced material requirements, resulting in cost savings and improved efficiency. The collaboration with COTEC aims to translate the existing PAH architecture to a manufacturing scale while maintaining low costs and high efficiency.

COTEC, a renowned leader in industrial electroplating based in South Korea, brings extensive expertise in electroplating and electrochemical processes to the partnership. With a strong track record in sectors such as aerospace, automotive, defense, and nuclear industries, COTEC has collaborated with esteemed clients like Boeing, Hanwha, and Airbus. Their experience and knowledge in electroplating will be instrumental in optimizing SunHydrogen’s semiconductor deposition for large-scale production.

SunHydrogen recognizes the significance of a diversified approach when it comes to scaling up its technology. By collaborating with specialized partners, the company can leverage their expertise in different components of the technology. The recent approval of $3.1 million in funding for Project NanoPEC, a collaborative initiative in Germany, exemplifies this approach. SunHydrogen’s CEO, Tim Young, emphasizes the importance of overcoming the challenge of translating lab-scale success to larger scales, a challenge that strategic partners like COTEC can help address.

The partnership between SunHydrogen and COTEC represents a shared commitment to accelerating the global adoption of green hydrogen as a clean and renewable energy source. By exploring and developing industrial electroplating solutions, the two companies aim to contribute to the advancement of the hydrogen industry and facilitate the transition to sustainable energy systems.
