French company GTT has achieved a major milestone in the field of hydrogen transportation with the Approval in Principle (AiP) granted by Japanese classification society ClassNK for its innovative membrane type containment system for liquid hydrogen (LH2).

This cutting-edge technology addresses the challenges of transporting hydrogen in liquefied form at extremely low temperatures. In this article, we explore the goals, technology, potential impact, and partnerships that have made GTT a driving force in accelerating the energy transition with their groundbreaking LH2 containment system.

GTT’s membrane type containment system is a scalable solution, enabling seamless adaptation to LH2 carriers of varying sizes without the need for significant design modifications. This versatility opens up new possibilities for transporting hydrogen across different markets and applications, making it a game-changer in the energy industry.

ClassNK’s validation of GTT’s cargo handling system design and risk analysis further bolsters the credibility and safety of the membrane type containment system. With safety being a paramount concern in handling hydrogen, this approval underlines the viability and reliability of GTT’s technology.

GTT’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology has positioned it at the forefront of the maritime transport and energy sectors. Their relentless pursuit of efficient and viable solutions for liquid hydrogen transportation is vital in driving the global transition towards a sustainable, carbon-free society.

GTT’s collaboration with energy major TotalEnergies and classification society Bureau Veritas has resulted in the joint development of a large-scale liquid hydrogen carrier. The 150,000 m3 vessel, equipped with GTT’s membrane-type containment system, showcases the collective effort towards revolutionizing LH2 transportation.

This is not the first time GTT has received recognition for its pioneering LH2 technologies. Their earlier AiPs from classification society DNV and their partnership with Shell underscore GTT’s dedication to innovation and sustainability.

GTT’s Approval in Principle from ClassNK for their membrane type containment system marks a momentous achievement in the quest for efficient, safe, and viable liquid hydrogen transportation. As the global demand for sustainable energy solutions continues to rise, GTT’s groundbreaking technology brings us one step closer to a greener, carbon-free future. By overcoming the challenges of transporting hydrogen at cryogenic temperatures, GTT’s LH2 containment system is set to play a key role in accelerating the energy transition on a global scale. With powerful partnerships and unwavering determination, GTT’s journey towards a sustainable hydrogen-powered future has only just begun.
