Switzerland, like many countries worldwide, faces significant challenges in its energy transition towards a sustainable future.

While the nation has made strides in adopting renewable energies, the need for cost-effective and efficient energy storage technologies remains a pressing concern. In response to this need, researchers, led by the Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration (IZM), are spearheading the development of a groundbreaking long-lasting zinc battery. This innovative project aims to revolutionize energy storage and provide a viable solution for long-term storage needs. In this article, we delve into the goals, technology, potential impact, and challenges surrounding Switzerland’s ambitious venture into the world of zinc batteries.

The main goal of Switzerland’s energy transition is to ensure a safe and reliable power supply through the use of renewable energies. The “Federal Law on a Safe Power Supply with Renewable Energies” serves as a framework to accelerate wind power projects, showcasing the country’s commitment to cleaner energy sources. However, the lack of efficient storage technologies remains a hurdle in fully harnessing the potential of renewables.

The research consortium, under the guidance of the Fraunhofer Institute, is striving to create a long-lasting battery optimized for extended storage periods. By combining the benefits of zinc anodes with alkaline water electrolysis, the team is developing a unique storage technology called the “Zn-H2” project. Zinc batteries offer cost advantages over lithium batteries, utilizing recyclable and readily available raw materials like steel, zinc, and potassium hydroxide.

The emergence of a cost-effective and efficient zinc battery could revolutionize energy storage capabilities, providing a key solution to grid stability and integration of renewable sources. The ability to produce hydrogen as needed also opens possibilities for alternative fuel options, further reducing carbon emissions. This breakthrough has the potential to drive Switzerland’s clean energy ambitions and contribute to the global fight against climate change.

Switzerland’s pursuit of long-lasting zinc batteries marks a significant step forward in the quest for sustainable energy storage. With the potential to transform the way energy is stored and utilized, this innovation brings hope for a cleaner and more resilient energy ecosystem. While challenges lie ahead, the collaborative efforts of the research consortium signal Switzerland’s determination to lead the way in sustainable energy solutions.
