Teesside Airport takes a groundbreaking step towards a sustainable future with the establishment of a permanent hydrogen refuelling station.

Element 2, the UK’s leading hydrogen refuelling business, will set up the station in late 2024 to 2025 following the airport’s success in securing the Government’s latest £8m Hydrogen Transport Hub Demonstration. The new station will not only cater to the airport’s low-emission hydrogen-fuelled vehicles but also support local commercial fleets and authorities. The move aligns with the UK’s decarbonization drive and complements Teesside Airport’s ambitious aim to be operationally net zero by 2030.

Teesside Airport’s achievement in securing a permanent hydrogen refuelling station cements its position as a pioneering hub for developing hydrogen technology. The success of the airport’s hydrogen refuelling trial in 2021 has led to this significant milestone, demonstrating the region’s expertise in the field.

The hydrogen refuelling station will not only serve the airport’s vehicles but also contribute to broader decarbonization efforts. Local commercial fleets and authorities will have access to hydrogen fuel, paving the way for cleaner transportation solutions and aligning with the UK’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions.

As part of the project, ULEMCo will develop hydrogen-powered airport ground-based support vehicles, including tow trucks and runway sweepers. This integration of hydrogen technology in airport operations demonstrates its versatility and potential impact on the aviation industry’s sustainability.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen emphasizes the airport’s continuous efforts to lead the UK’s net-zero ambitions. The permanent hydrogen refuelling station is a crucial step towards creating cleaner, healthier, and safer industries, fostering innovative and clean technologies in the region.

Teesside International Airport’s dedication to responsible and sustainable practices extends beyond aviation. The airport is actively pursuing the adoption of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and exploring opportunities for renewable energy generation, including the establishment of a local green energy company.

The funding from Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, provides crucial support for the development of hydrogen refuelling infrastructure. Teesside Airport’s partnership with Element 2 and other stakeholders exemplifies the collaborative approach necessary to build a greener future.
