India to start green hydrogen export

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, who owns India’s first green hydrogen-powered car, unveiled this ambitious plan at the Aadhar Infra Confluence in Delhi. He highlighted the government’s aim not only to harness green hydrogen for domestic use but also to position India as a key global exporter of this clean fuel.

Nitin Gadkari’s hydrogen-powered car, known as “Mirai,” aptly symbolizes India’s aspirations for a cleaner, greener future. He emphasized the need for forward-thinking strategies, envisioning India as an energy exporter rather than an importer. Gadkari stressed the importance of reducing energy reliance on conventional sources and shifting major industries to hydrogen power. In this vision, hydrogen would become the lifeblood of industries ranging from steel and chemicals to pharmaceuticals.

A unique aspect of India’s hydrogen revolution lies in its source: farmers. Gadkari proposed that hydrogen for these grand projects could be produced by farmers themselves, leveraging their land and resources. By installing solar panels on rooftops and utilizing electrolyzers, Indian farmers could become the cornerstone of a hydrogen-producing network. This ingenious approach not only empowers rural communities but also contributes to India’s energy independence.

Uttar Pradesh’s Green Hydrogen Revolution

Uttar Pradesh, India’s most populous state, is set to embark on a green hydrogen revolution with ambitious plans to produce nearly half a million tonnes of this clean fuel annually by 2028. This endeavor aligns with the state’s broader goal of expanding its clean and renewable energy portfolio, ultimately contributing to India’s sustainable energy future.

One of the most significant benefits of Uttar Pradesh’s green hydrogen push is its potential to generate employment opportunities for over 60,000 people. This isn’t just about clean energy; it’s about fostering economic growth and prosperity for the state’s residents.

To ensure the success of this groundbreaking initiative, the Uttar Pradesh government is crafting its maiden Green Hydrogen Policy for 2023. This policy will serve as a comprehensive roadmap to harness the full potential of domestic green hydrogen production, setting clear guidelines and targets.

With the current hydrogen demand in Uttar Pradesh hovering around 900,000 tonnes annually, particularly in sectors such as fertilizers and refineries, the state’s green hydrogen expansion comes at a crucial time. It addresses not only the environmental imperative but also the increasing industrial appetite for this clean fuel.

At the UP Global Investors Summit 2023, the state attracted substantial investment proposals, totaling over Rs 2.70 trillion, from 20 companies, primarily in the renewable energy sector, including green hydrogen. This reflects a growing confidence in Uttar Pradesh’s potential as a clean energy hub.

The state’s strategy also includes hydrogen blending in regions where green hydrogen consumption is high. Additionally, plans are underway to establish carbon dioxide recovery units, further contributing to emissions reduction efforts.

Recognizing the vital role of water in green hydrogen production, Uttar Pradesh plans to leverage its abundant river resources. This includes creating water reserves near rivers and utilizing rainwater for hydrogen production, demonstrating a holistic and sustainable approach.
