Yokogawa Fuels Yuri Green Hydrogen Project in Australia

Yokogawa Electric Corporation’s subsidiary, Yokogawa Australia, has received a pivotal order for an energy management system (EMS). This system will play a central role in the Yuri Green Hydrogen project, a groundbreaking initiative aiming to establish an industrial-scale renewable hydrogen production complex in Australia’s Western region.

The Yuri project is a joint endeavor led by Yuri Operations Pty Ltd, a collaboration between ENGIE Renewables Australia Pty Ltd and Mitsui & Co., Ltd. This ambitious undertaking, designed to boost Australia’s renewable energy sector, is being constructed by a consortium featuring engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning (EPCC) experts Technip Energies and Monford Group Pty Ltd.

The complex will comprise an 18-megawatt solar power plant, an 8-megawatt battery energy storage system (BESS), and a 10-megawatt electrolyzer. These components will harness the power of zero-carbon solar energy to produce an impressive 640 tons of green hydrogen annually. This green hydrogen will serve as a vital feedstock for the production of green ammonia at an adjacent plant operated by Yara Pilbara Fertiliser Pty Ltd (YPF), a subsidiary of Yara International ASA, one of the world’s leading nitrogen-based mineral fertilizer producers.

For the control and management of the solar power plant, BESS, and electrolyzer, Yokogawa Australia will employ a state-of-the-art Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system developed by Yokogawa Group’s company PXiSE Energy Solutions LLC. This SCADA system will seamlessly integrate with an integrated control system (ICS), including a Collaborative Information Server solution, all expected to be provided by Yokogawa as part of the project.

Once these systems are in place, the Yuri facility’s renewable energy production will be autonomously managed to ensure stability and power quality. This management will take into account factors such as the operational requirements of the adjacent ammonia plant, weather conditions, and other variables, ensuring efficient and sustainable hydrogen production.

Yokogawa’s grid control solutions, exemplified by PXiSE, have garnered praise through their successful implementation in the Horizon Power project in Western Australia. The solutions have been deployed in Onslow and will soon be adopted in 34 additional Horizon Power microgrids.

Crucially, Yokogawa Australia’s Center of Technical Excellence in Perth stands ready to provide robust technical support and engineering services, drawing upon years of experience in delivering cutting-edge solutions across a wide range of industries in Australia.

Koji Nakaoka, senior vice president of Yokogawa, highlighted the company’s commitment to integrated energy management systems, stating, “In a world where systems are becoming closely integrated, based on the system of systems (SoS) concept, we will contribute to our customers’ ESG management by offering high-value-added solutions, including the integration of plant control and energy management systems to enable timely control of complex energy systems.”

As the Yuri Green Hydrogen project progresses with Yokogawa’s energy management system at its core, Australia’s hydrogen dreams are set to become a reality, marking a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.
