Japanese conglomerate Mitsui & Co. has partnered with the Fukui prefectural government and Hokuriku Electric Power Company to conduct a groundbreaking feasibility study.

Their mission: to develop a cutting-edge hydrogen and ammonia supply chain using a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) in the port of Tsuruga. This initiative represents a significant step towards shaping Japan’s future energy landscape and is an important contribution to the global push for sustainable and clean energy sources.

The project, backed by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry in Japan, is among the select few to receive a subsidy under the ministry’s scheme. Its primary goal is to foster a better understanding of structural advancements and transitions within the energy sector, and, notably, to consolidate and industrialize hydrogen and ammonia use within the region. It aligns perfectly with Japan’s strategic energy plan and the nation’s aspirations for carbon neutrality.

Mitsui’s study delves into the development of a hydrogen and ammonia supply chain at Tsuruga port, an essential step in promoting clean energy. This encompasses the introduction of an ammonia FSRU, the utilization of ammonia supplied by the FSRU, and harnessing hydrogen to generate power for cargo handling equipment.

Fukui Prefecture, in collaboration with Hokuriku Electric Power, plays a crucial role in this study. The prefecture examines the introduction of hydrogen-based power generation, while Hokuriku Electric Power explores the practical use of ammonia. Mitsui & Co. takes the lead in coordinating the study related to the floating storage and regasification unit.

Japan’s Sixth Strategic Energy Plan sets the stage for hydrogen and ammonia to be pivotal resources in the country’s journey toward carbon neutrality. These clean and renewable energy sources are expected to play a central role in reducing carbon emissions and propelling Japan into a sustainable and eco-friendly era.

Mitsui & Co.’s endeavors go beyond Tsuruga; the conglomerate also collaborates with Mitsui Chemicals, IHI Corporation, and The Kansai Electric Power Co. in a joint study based in the Osaka coastal industrial zone. This initiative underscores Mitsui’s commitment to promoting a sustainable and cleaner future for Japan and the world.

Mitsui & Co., in partnership with the Fukui prefectural government and Hokuriku Electric Power Company, leads the way in transforming Japan’s energy landscape. Their visionary feasibility study represents an essential step towards a greener and more sustainable future. With clean energy at the forefront, Japan emerges as a global pioneer in renewable hydrogen and ammonia production.
