The Sultanate of Oman, known for its commitment to sustainable practices, is making significant strides towards clean energy, focusing on wind and solar power to generate electricity. In an ambitious move, Oman is investing over $30 billion in accelerating hydrogen production, a key player in the global shift towards renewable energy sources.
Dr. Ghazi Ali Al Rowas, the Dean of Research at Sultan Qaboos University and a member of the Steering Committee for Climate Change in Oman, sheds light on the nation’s commitment to achieving zero carbon neutrality by 2050. He emphasizes that these policies not only preserve the environment but also contribute to the reduction of gaseous emissions, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change.
Oman’s proactive stance on climate issues is set to take center stage at the upcoming UN Climate Summit “COP28” in Dubai. Operating under the banner “Oman is a Sustainable Future,” the country aims to showcase its national efforts in reducing climate change impacts.
Dr. Said Mohammed Al Sarmi, a Climate Affairs Expert at the Environment Authority and another member of the Steering Committee for Climate Change in Oman, highlights the significant climate changes witnessed in the past decade. Increased tropical cyclones and rising global temperatures, coupled with fluctuations in rainfall, have prompted Oman to develop a comprehensive national plan for both mitigation and adaptation strategies.
According to Dr. Said, the impending climate summit is a pivotal moment for a global review of efforts towards achieving the goals set in the Paris Agreement. The Sultanate of Oman is gearing up for active participation during the World Climate Summit and the 28th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement.
From November 30 to December 12, Oman will showcase its commitment at the World Climate Summit, exhibiting its efforts and advancements in clean energy. The pavilion set up during the summit will serve as a testament to Oman’s dedication to a sustainable future, a beacon for nations worldwide in the fight against climate change.
