Universal Kraft’s As Pontes Project Secures €15M Boost

Swedish group Universal Kraft’s ambitious project, GP H2 As Pontes, has received a substantial financial boost from the central Government. The project, set to establish a large industrial conglomerate in As Pontes, aims to produce green ammonia and hydrogen, contributing to the region’s economic and environmental transformation.

Universal Kraft secured 15 million euros in the second call of the Strategic Project for Economic Recovery and Transformation (PERTE) for Renewable Energy, Renewable Hydrogen, and Storage (ERHA). The company has announced a total investment of 315 million euros for the project, surpassing the initially proposed 200 million euros. The increased investment underscores the significance and scale of the renewable hydrogen initiative.

The GP H2 As Pontes project, based in the former mining town, anticipates generating approximately 60 jobs. The first phase of the construction involves developing a maximum capacity of 120 megawatts with an annual production target of around 100,000 tons of ammonia. The project’s impact extends to the outer port of Ferrol, where the manufactured products are set to be transported for export, creating a vital connection between production and export facilities.

Universal Kraft, leveraging its extensive experience in the renewable energy sector, plans to establish an integrated solar energy center at the As Pontes site. This strategic integration aligns with the broader goals of sustainable and green energy production.

Sources from the Ministry of Economy confirmed that the company’s project processing is underway, with Universal Kraft providing the necessary documentation across various departments. The project, having secured Priority Business Initiative status, could potentially undergo a streamlined process as a Strategic Industrial Project (PIE), significantly reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
