Emirates Steel Arkan (ESA), Ohmium International, and Khalifa University of Science and Technology have inked a Strategic Collaboration on Hydrogen Research and Development, solidifying the UAE’s commitment to advancing green steel production.
The agreement, signed at COP28, marks a significant step towards decarbonizing the steel sector and realizing the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative.
Under the ‘Make it in the Emirates’ initiative by the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology, the collaboration aims to spearhead a robust research and development program. The program’s primary goal is to fast-track the adoption of green hydrogen, a clean energy source, in the steel sector. This initiative positions ESA to emerge as a leading manufacturer of green steel, contributing to sustainable construction and infrastructure projects.
Ohmium International, a leading green hydrogen company, will bring its expertise in designing, manufacturing, and deploying advanced Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) electrolyzers to the collaboration. Khalifa University, renowned for its academic excellence, will leverage its research capabilities. This combined effort aims to develop cleaner production methods for green steel, aligning with the UAE’s National Strategy for Industry and Advanced Technology.
The strategic collaboration aligns with the UAE National Strategy, focusing on decarbonizing hard-to-abate sectors. By harnessing the unique perspectives of each organization, the initiative aims to optimize the application of green hydrogen in the production of Direct Reduced Iron (DRI). The ultimate impact will be the production of high-quality, low-carbon steel, supporting the UAE’s economic diversification plans.
