Westport Fuel Systems, a leading supplier of alternative fuel systems, collaborated with key partners, including KAJ Inrikes and IKEA, to exhibit the prowess of its H2 HPDI fuel system-equipped prototype truck.

This marks the second successful validation of the system in a heavy haul application within the last 60 days, signifying a significant leap forward in decarbonizing the heavy-duty transport industry.

The primary goal of this event was to showcase Westport’s H2 HPDI fuel system technology in action, particularly in heavy haul applications. The demonstration involved a prototype truck pulling a trailer loaded with approximately 40 tons of IKEA home-furnishing products. The successful completion of this showcase is a crucial step in accelerating the decarbonization efforts within the heavy-duty transport sector.

The event brought together major players representing the entire hydrogen ecosystem, emphasizing a holistic approach to sustainable transportation. Key collaborators included KAJ Inrikes as the fleet operator, Smålandslogistik as a large fleet owner, Metacon AB as the hydrogen fuel provider, and Hydri AB as the hydrogen infrastructure company. IKEA, the end user, played a pivotal role as a buyer of sustainable transportation services.

Westport’s H2 HPDI fuel system for internal combustion engines emerged as a robust and affordable solution with higher power and torque compared to traditional diesel engines. The European Commission’s recommendation for a Zero Emission Vehicle aligns with Westport’s expectation that H2 HPDI-powered vehicles will meet this definition for a range of heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

The demonstration’s success implies a potential shift towards using hydrogen in internal combustion engines for decarbonization. The technology showcased its high performance, offering an attractive solution with quick time to market. IKEA, a global retail giant, participated in the field testing of Westport’s H2 HPDI prototype truck, highlighting the real-life benefits of this innovative approach.
