Port of Antwerp-Bruges, in collaboration with CMB.TECH, proudly unveils the Hydrotug 1 – the world’s first hydrogen-powered tugboat.

This pioneering vessel marks a significant leap in the maritime industry’s efforts to embrace eco-friendly fuel and contributes to the Port’s ambitious goal of climate neutrality by 2050.

At the heart of this revolutionary vessel lies its propulsion system, a testament to innovation and sustainability. The Hydrotug 1 utilizes BeHydro V12 dual-fuel, medium-speed engines, each boasting a remarkable 2 megawatts. What sets this tugboat apart is its ability to burn hydrogen in combination with traditional fuel, ushering in a new era in clean maritime transport.

The adoption of hydrogen combustion engines translates into a substantial reduction in traditional fuel consumption and associated emissions. The tugboat achieves an impressive 65% overall reduction, positioning it as a trailblazer in environmentally conscious shipping. The vessel, equipped with aftertreatment meeting the latest EU Stage V emissions standards, sets a new benchmark for sustainable maritime practices.

The Hydrotug 1 is equipped with the capacity to store 415 kg of compressed hydrogen in six bundles on its deck. This not only showcases the vessel’s commitment to clean energy but also results in eliminating the annual emissions equivalent to 350 cars. The environmental impact is undeniable, marking a significant stride toward a greener maritime future.

Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of Port of Antwerp-Bruges, emphasizes the role of hydrogen as a key player in achieving a climate-friendly economy. The Hydrotug 1 stands as a symbol of the Port’s commitment to being a European pioneer in the hydrogen economy. Vandermeiren envisions the tugboat as a source of inspiration for other ports, illustrating the potential of hydrogen in the maritime sector.

Annick De Ridder, Port Alderman of the City of Antwerp, highlights the broader significance of the Hydrotug 1 launch. The vessel represents not only the ambition of Port of Antwerp-Bruges to be the energy gateway of Europe but also the collaborative effort across Flemish cities. From Antwerp to Ostend, Ghent, and Zeebrugge, the Hydrotug 1 is a testament to Flemish cooperation and innovation.

Alexander Saverys, CEO of CMB.TECH, expresses gratitude for the partnership with Port of Antwerp-Bruges. The Hydrotug 1, labeled as the largest hydrogen ship globally, is a European achievement. It aligns with the shared commitment to decarbonize shipping and showcases scalable technology. Saverys sees the Hydrotug 1 as a significant step in the larger context of decarbonizing the shipping industry.
